Nations Briefing 10.08.07 Second Round of latest Discussions on Western Sahara get Underway *The second round of negotiations under UN auspices on Western Sahara got underway this morning in Manhasset, New York, with the participation of the parties – Morocco and Frente POLISARIO – and the neighbouring countries, Algeria and Mauritania. *The talks are being led by Peter van Walsum, the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara. The Moroccan delegation is led by Chakib Benmoussa, the Minister of the Interior. The Frente POLISARIO delegation is led by Mahfud Ali Veiba, who is a member of the POLISARIO leadership. *Addressing the participants in his opening remarks, van Walsum said, “I hope you will maintain the same good atmosphere that characterized the first round. However, atmosphere is not everything. The Security Council expects us to conduct good-faith and productive negotiations.” *As for the agenda, participants are continuing the discussions they initiated at Manhasset in June. There will be meetings in plenary today, as well as separate discussions between the Secretary-General’s personal envoy and each of the four delegations. |

PRESSE QUOTIDIEN DU BUREAU DE LA PORTE-PAROLE DU SECRÉTAIRE
GÉNÉRAL DE L’ONU: 10 AOÛT 2007 Sahara occidental Le deuxième tour des négociations sur le Sahara occidental, organisées sous les auspices des Nations Unies, a débuté ce matin à Manhasset dans l’état de New York, avec la participation des parties intéressées, le Maroc et le Front POLISARIO, ainsi que des pays voisins, l’Algérie et la Mauritanie. M. Peter van Walsum, l’Envoyé personnel du Secrétaire général pour le Sahara Occidental, est le médiateur de ces pourparlers. La délégation marocaine est dirigée par le Ministre de l’intérieur, M. Chakib Benmoussa. La délégation du Front POLISARIO est conduite par M. Mahfud Ali Veiba, un des dirigeants du Front. Dans son discours d’ouverture, prononcé ce matin devant les participants, M. van Walsum a déclaré « J’espère que vous maintiendrez la même atmosphère positive qui a caractérisé le premier tour des négociations. Cependant, l’atmosphère ne suffit pas. Le Conseil de sécurité attend de nous des négociations positives et de bonne foi. » Les participants poursuivent les discussions entamées à Manhasset au mois de juin dernier. Des réunions plénières ont eu lieu aujourd’hui, et l’Envoyé personnel du Secrétaire général s’est entretenu séparément avec chacune des quatre délégations. |
