 PRESS RELEASE

Denmark and EU support the United Nations' endeavours to find a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara

Copenhagen, 25th July 2002

On 3rd July 2002, Mr. Søren Søndergaard, member of the Danish Parliament (Folketinget), representing the Red-Green Alliance, addressed an interpellation to Mr. Per Stig Møller, Danish Foreign Minister, whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union. The Foreign Minister was requested to give a statement on whether Denmark still maintains the same position with regard to the question of Western Sahara, which consists in that Denmark does not recognise Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara and that it supports the United Nations' peace initiative. Recalling that the question of Western Sahara is still unresolved, Mr. Møller stated that, "Denmark and the European Union support the UN Security Council's handling of the matter and also the Secretary General and his Personal Envoy, James A. Baker, in their endeavours to find a solution to the conflict".

It is to be recalled that the last interpellation to a Danish foreign minister about the question of Western Sahara was made in December 1997. Asked by MP Keld Albrechtsen (Red-Green Alliance) about Denmark's position regarding Morocco's occupation of Western Sahara, the then Foreign Minister, Mr. Niels Helveg Petersen, stated that, "Denmark does not recognise Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, and supports United Nations' endeavours to find a solution for Western Sahara based on self-determination".
