European parliamentary intergroup "Peace for the Saharawi People"

28.02.01

Press release

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, the European parliamentary intergroup "Peace for the Saharawi People" reaffirms its total support for the strict implementation of the UN Peace Plan and the holding of a referendum of self-determination for the Saharawi People.

The European intergroup on Western Sahara welcomes the extension of the mandate of the MINURSO until 30 April 2001 by the Security Council. Yet on this point, we must nevertheless remind the international community that the only peaceful and lasting solution to the Western Sahara conflict is the strict implementation of the Peace Plan and the holding of a free, democratic, and transparent referendum of self-determination.

In this context we view with great concern the declaration of the Moroccan interior minister Ahmed Midaoui in which he claimed that the "only solution to the dispute over the region" is that "Morocco maintains control over its entire territory".

In front of a situation of renewed tensions, we therefore hope that international legality and reason will prevail in order to prevent the resumption of a conflict which could only destabilise the entire Maghreb region.
