The European Saharawi Support Co-ordinating group, met today in Madrid, under the Presidency of the Belgian Senator Pierre Galand, to analyse the peace process in Western Sahara after the last report of the UN Secretary General and the resolution 1535 of January 30th, which extends the mandate of MINURSO until April 30th. The Group appeals to the international community in general, and the United Nations in particular, to act to ensure that all the Saharawi people can exercise their right to self-determination and conclude the decolonisation process for the last colony in Africa - Western Sahara.

In particular, we ask the Secretary-General of the United Nations to do everything he can to put the "Peace plan for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara" into action, by imposing a political solution that guarantees the self-determination of the Saharawi people, as provided for in the first paragraph of resolution 1429 of the United Nations Security Council from 30th July 2002.

The European co-ordination of support to the Saharawi people, profiting from meeting in Madrid on the same date as the Socialist International, also launches an appeal to this body to support the Peace Plan for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara, and work actively to break the impasse so that it can be implemented as soon as possible, for the benefit of the whole Maghreb region.

The inhuman suffering that the Saharawi people has endured for 29 years demands that there be no more delays or postponements.
