Liberal International for a self-determination referendum in Western Sahara

The International Liberal has clearly reaffirmed its support to the inalienable right for self-determination of the Sahrawi people, through a free and fair referendum.

In the main resolution, entitled "The world today", of its 51st Congress, held from 21 to 23 March 2002 in Budapest (Hungary), the Liberal International has reserved a paragraph to the Western Sahara decolonisation issue.

In this paragraph, "the Liberal International reiterates its supports for a free and fair referendum in the Western Sahara". The Liberal International "calls on all parties involved to make such a referendum for self-determination possible within the framework of the United Nations and abide by its outcome".

A Sahrawi delegation, composed by Fadel Ismail and Slimane Ahmed, members of the External Relations Committee of the Frente POLISARIO took part to the congress and actively participated to the working commissions. The Sahrawi delegation met the majority of the delegations, in particular :

The Sahrawi delegation also met delegates from Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Norway, Turkey, Canada and the delegates of many African countries.

Liberal International is composed by almost a hundred parties from the whole continents. 450 delegates participated to its 51st congress.

L'Internationale Libérale pour un référendum d'autodétermination au Sahara Occidental

L'Internationale Libérale a clairement réaffirmé son soutien au peuple sahraoui pour l'exercice de son droit inaliénable à l'autodétermination, à travers un référendum libre et juste.

Lors de son 51ème congrès, tenu du 21 au 23 mars 2002 à Budapest (Hongrie), l'Internationale Libérale a en effet réservé, dans sa résolution finale, un paragraphe sur la question de décolonisation du Sahara Occidental.

Dans ce paragraphe, « l'Internationale Libérale réitère son soutien à un référendum libre et juste au Sahara Occidental ». Elle « appelle les parties concernées à œuvrer à la tenue dudit référendum d'autodétermination, dans le cadre des Nations Unies, et à en respecter les résultats ».

Une délégation sahraouie, composée de Fadel Ismail et Slimane Ahmed, membres du Comité des relations extérieures du Frente POLISARIO, a pris part aux travaux du congrès et a participé activement aux délibérations des différentes commissions de travail. La délégation sahraouie a rencontré et discuté avec la plupart des délégations, notamment avec :

La délégation sahraouie a également rencontré les délégations d'Espagne, de Suède, du Danemark, de RFA, de Finlande, de Norvège, de Turquie ainsi que celles de plusieurs pays d'Afrique.

L'Internationale Libérale regroupe une centaine de partis de tous les continents. Plus de 450 délégués ont participé à son 51ème congrès.
